Terms of Use
Last updated: 1 November 2026 (draft)
These Terms of Use govern your purchase and use of ProMax Display. They're written in plain English and kept as short as we can. Please read them before you buy.
1. Agreement
By installing, activating or using ProMax Display, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, don't install ProMax Display, and request a refund within 14 days of purchase under section 9.
2. Licence grant
When you buy ProMax Display we grant you a personal, worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable licence to install and use it on one Mac that you own or are the main user of, for as long as your licence remains active. You can move the licence to another Mac by deactivating it on the first one.
This licence is for personal use. If you're an organisation, school or business and want ProMax Display for several people, contact hello@promaxdisplay.com.
3. Licence restrictions
You agree not to:
- Copy, distribute, sub-license, lease, lend, sell or otherwise transfer ProMax Display or your licence key.
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble or try to derive the source code of ProMax Display, except where the law expressly allows it despite this restriction.
- Modify ProMax Display or make derivative works based on it.
- Remove or change any copyright, trademark or other notices.
- Use ProMax Display in any way that breaks the law, including export-control laws.
- Share your licence key, or use ProMax Display on Macs you don't own or aren't the main user of.
4. Licence keys and revocation
Your licence key is unique to you and tied to your purchase. We may deactivate licence keys that:
- Belong to refunded, charged-back or fraudulent purchases.
- Are shared, leaked, resold or used in ways that break these Terms.
If your licence is deactivated, ProMax Display switches itself off the next time it checks, and the key no longer activates it on any Mac. The app checks your licence with Lemon Squeezy each time it opens.
5. System requirements and your acknowledgements
ProMax Display needs macOS 27 or later and a MacBook with a notch. Some features work with no changes to your Mac. To make every app's full screen use the notch row, these changes must be made to your Mac:
- System Integrity Protection (SIP) partly turned off, from Recovery: its filesystem protections and debugging restrictions.
- ProMax Display's helper allowed in Login Items, so it can load a small add-on into the Dock.
You acknowledge and agree that:
- Turning parts of SIP off removes one of macOS's defences against software changing system files or interfering with other processes, and lowers your Mac's security.
- ProMax Display loads code into the Dock. This is intentional and necessary for the every-app feature. It does not load code into your other apps.
- For apps with their own notch row setting, ProMax Display changes a setting in that app's own settings when you switch it on, and can put it back.
- Some apps may not work as expected with ProMax Display. Any list of supported apps is not exhaustive and may change without notice.
- You are responsible for understanding what turning parts of SIP off means on your Mac, and for any other software you have installed.
- You make these changes to your Mac at your own risk. You can turn SIP back on at any time; the steps are at promaxdisplay.pages.dev/support.
- You have the right and authority to change SIP on the Mac you use ProMax Display on, and doing so doesn't break any agreement you have with anyone else (including an employer's IT or device-management policy). If not, don't make these changes, and request a refund within the period in section 9.
6. Future macOS updates and compatibility
Apple regularly updates macOS. We make reasonable efforts to test and update ProMax Display for new macOS releases, but we don't guarantee:
- That ProMax Display will keep working on future macOS versions, point releases or security updates.
- That an Apple update won't break ProMax Display, temporarily or permanently.
- That a fix for any problem caused by macOS will be available within any particular time, or at all.
- That changes to Apple's security frameworks won't stop ProMax Display working.
If a macOS update breaks ProMax Display and no compatible version is available within a reasonable time, your remedy is to remove the add-on and uninstall ProMax Display, and turn SIP back on if you wish, as described at promaxdisplay.pages.dev/support. We are not liable for losing the extra screen area, for time spent troubleshooting, or for indirect consequences of an Apple update.
7. Backups and your responsibility for your Mac
You are responsible for keeping regular backups of your Mac, with Time Machine or another tool. We are not liable for data loss or corruption that you could reasonably have prevented with routine backups.
You are also responsible for your Mac's setup and stability more broadly, including other software you've installed. We can't diagnose or fix problems unrelated to ProMax Display.
8. Updates and discontinuation
Your purchase includes free updates to the same major version of ProMax Display, delivered through the Sparkle update framework. We may release future major versions that need a separate purchase or upgrade fee; if so, your licence keeps working for the major version you bought. We won't push updates that change these Terms or the security trade-offs without telling you.
We may discontinue ProMax Display at any time. If we do, we'll keep honouring active licences in their state at the time for as long as licence checks keep working. Updates and new features may stop. We don't have to refund licences if we discontinue ProMax Display, except where consumer law requires it.
9. Refunds
Every purchase comes with a 14-day refund, through our payment processor, Lemon Squeezy. To ask for one, email hello@promaxdisplay.com with your order number. You don't need to give a reason.
If you're a consumer in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, this sits alongside any statutory cancellation rights you have for digital content.
When a refund is issued, your licence key is deactivated as described in section 4.
10. Disclaimer of warranties
PROMAX DISPLAY IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, OR ARISING FROM A COURSE OF DEALING OR USAGE OF TRADE.
WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT:
- PROMAX DISPLAY WILL OPERATE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR ON A PARTICULAR SCHEDULE.
- PROMAX DISPLAY WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH ANY SPECIFIC APPLICATION, HARDWARE CONFIGURATION, OR FUTURE VERSION OF macOS.
- ANY DEFECT, INCOMPATIBILITY, OR ISSUE INTRODUCED BY AN APPLE UPDATE WILL BE FIXED, OR FIXED WITHIN ANY PARTICULAR TIMEFRAME.
- YOUR DATA, FILES, OR SETTINGS WILL NOT BE LOST OR CORRUPTED, IN PROMAX DISPLAY, IN APPS RUNNING ALONGSIDE IT, OR ELSEWHERE ON YOUR MAC.
- YOUR MAC WILL NOT EXPERIENCE INSTABILITY, KERNEL PANICS, BOOT FAILURES, OR OTHER ISSUES, WHETHER OR NOT COINCIDENT WITH PROMAX DISPLAY USE.
Nothing in this section limits any rights you have under consumer law that can't lawfully be excluded.
11. Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL THE DEVELOPER OF PROMAX DISPLAY BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF PROMAX DISPLAY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Lost profits, revenue or business opportunities.
- Lost, corrupted or unrecoverable data, files or work (including unsaved work in any app).
- System instability, kernel panics, boot failures, or any need to reinstall macOS.
- Hardware failures, whether or not coincident with the use of ProMax Display.
- App incompatibility, including any other app or the Dock crashing, freezing or behaving unexpectedly while ProMax Display is installed.
- Damages arising from changes to macOS, including future Apple security or system updates that conflict with ProMax Display.
- Loss of access to ProMax Display or your licence because the app is discontinued or our payment processor's services are unavailable.
- Time spent troubleshooting, restoring backups or recovering data.
OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OR YOUR USE OF PROMAX DISPLAY IS LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR YOUR LICENCE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM.
Nothing in this section limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that can't lawfully be excluded.
12. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless the developer of ProMax Display from any claims, demands, damages, losses, liabilities, costs and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from: (a) your use of ProMax Display in breach of these Terms; (b) your making the changes in section 5 on a Mac you don't have the right or authority to change (including one owned or managed by an employer or anyone else); (c) your modification, redistribution or reverse-engineering of ProMax Display in breach of section 3; or (d) your breaking any law or third-party right in connection with your use of ProMax Display.
This section doesn't apply to consumers where consumer-protection law makes it unenforceable, and doesn't limit any rights you have under that law.
13. Force majeure
We're not liable for any failure or delay caused by circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including acts of God, war, civil unrest, government action, network or hosting outages, payment-processor outages, pandemics, or actions by Apple Inc. that affect macOS or its security frameworks.
14. Third-party software
ProMax Display includes open-source components, such as the Sparkle update framework. Each is licensed under its own open-source licence, which takes precedence over these Terms for that component.
15. Termination
These Terms stay in effect until terminated. We may end your licence without notice if you break these Terms. On termination, you must uninstall ProMax Display from every Mac it's on. Sections that by their nature survive termination continue to apply, including sections 10 to 13 and 16 to 19.
16. Intellectual property
ProMax Display, its name, its mark, and all associated software, designs and content (except open-source components under section 14) belong to the developer of ProMax Display. Your purchase gives you a licence to use the software, not ownership of any code, design or intellectual property.
17. Trademark notices
ProMax Display is an independent product, not affiliated with or endorsed by Apple Inc.
macOS, Mac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Apple silicon and the Apple logo are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the United States and other countries. Any reference to them on the ProMax Display website, in the app or in related materials only identifies the hardware and software ProMax Display works with, and doesn't suggest sponsorship or endorsement.
Other product names and trademarks mentioned belong to their owners.
18. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms, and any dispute arising from them, are governed by the laws of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction over any such dispute, except that consumers elsewhere keep the benefit of any mandatory protections under their local law.
19. Severability
If a court finds any part of these Terms unenforceable, that part will be changed as little as needed to make it enforceable, or removed if that isn't possible. The rest stays in full force.
20. Assignment
You may not assign or transfer these Terms or your licence without our written consent. We may assign these Terms as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of substantially all of our business, on notice to you.
21. Entire agreement
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about ProMax Display and replace any earlier agreement on the same subject.
22. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top shows the latest version. Using ProMax Display after a material change means you accept it. If you don't agree, stop using ProMax Display and ask for a refund (if you're within the 14 days) or uninstall it.
